A 9-year-old wire fox terrier named Ronnie was named local rescue organization spcaLA's Hero Dog of the Year in a ceremony held Tuesday.

Ronnie -- who lives with owners Janis and Eric Christensen and their two other dogs in the Orange County town of Rossmoor -- placed himself between a coyote and Janis, who was holding another of the family's dogs, when the coyote jumped a fence into the Christensens' backyard last August.

The coyote bit Ronnie, leaving him with two puncture wounds to the shoulder; Ronnie bit back and then chased the coyote until it disappeared from view, Eric Christensen told the Orange County Register.

According to the Christensens, such behavior was uncharacteristic of the dog, which, under normal circumstances, is the shyest and most retiring of their pets. That's part of the reason he was chosen to receive the award, according to spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.

He was the loudest puppy in the shelter. He was the largest puppy in the shelter. She walked up to his cage and was transfixed at this reactive bundle. Her ex husband later said when he looked at the dog's eyes and then at hers, he knew that dog was coming home. They had the same expression in them. Frightened and lost.

PictureHe was difficult to house train, and left samples of his wares on the way home from the shelter. He was joyful, happy to be alive and out of the cage, and let loose in the back of the car, his facial expression one big doggie smile. He was nonstop motion, pacing back and forth in the car, yipping and whining.

This was him for the next year; dropping his waste wherever he saw fit, yapping, whining and howling like a wolf. There was no bark in his repertoire. His mom would take him out several times a day to encourage the use of the outdoors as a toilet. He would oblige somewhat, then finish his business indoors.

He did not have any interest in learning his name or indulging in good leash manners. To him, the leash was a good way to pull his mom to wherever; whatever or whoever he wanted to sniff. The world was his olfactory oyster, and smell it he did with great gusto. I saw, I smell, I conquered was his doggie motto.

This was all well and good when he was still under 40 pounds, but as he neared 6 months, he got big…really big and really strong. And really did not like other dogs. So, off he went to be neutered, his mom hoping that would take the feral qualities he possessed.

Well, he calmed down a little, pulled a little less, but still hated dogs. And cats. Except his two cats, Doobie and Winkie, who lived in his home. It was his home, and all other inhabitants were there at his discretion. But he loved his human mom, and she loved, cared for and happily put up with all his quirks.

The home life of the two humans in this family was troubled and disjointed. The husband was frequently absent, and when there, made his wife wish he was still absent. He would walk Bucky boy and play with him, but the dog was his wife's and he knew it.

The stress of the shattering marriage seemed to contribute to the woman's ill health. She developed an illness that, according to her doctor, would take about one year to be recovered from and rid of. The husband did what he could to help, as long as it did not interfere with whatever he wanted to do. This meant leaving his wife and pets alone for sometimes 20 hours at a time.

Bucky boy and the cats would never leave their mom's side. Bucky would sit, with his paws and snoot perched on his mom's hip, and basically not budge. This dog, who had made a commitment to avoid housebreaking, was now "holding it in" for those 20 hours they were alone. Their mom was bedridden and would only get up, bouncing between walls, to feed her pets and use the bathroom. The three pets would follow her to the kitchen or bathroom, and then back to bed. Where they would wait until the man of the house returned.

It is decades later. The pets grew old and passed. The marriage split up.

Yes that was me, and I still cry over my untrainable Bucky boy, who really came through when he was needed most. And missed most every day!

Husbands, if you end up in the doghouse, consider it a promotion.

A third of pet-owning married women said their pets are better listeners than their husbands, according to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll released Wednesday. Eighteen percent of pet-owning married men said their pets are better listeners than their wives.

Christina Holmdahl, 40, talks all the time to her cat, two dogs or three horses -- about her husband, naturally.

"Whoever happens to be with me when I'm rambling," said Holmdahl, who's stationed with her husband at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. "A lot of times, I'm just venting about work or complaining about the husband."

She thinks everyone should have a pet to talk to like her horse, Whistle, who's been with her since she was 19.

"We all say things we don't mean when we are upset about stuff," she said. "When we have time to talk it out and rationalize it, we can think about it better and we can calm down and see both sides better."

Dog Trainer Starts Patriot Service Dogs to Help Disabled Veterans
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A First Coast woman with a knack for working with dogs is using her talent to make a difference in the lives of disabled veterans.

Susan Bolton has created Patriot Service Dogs, an organization made up of six volunteers. The volunteers train the dogs to pick up car keys, open doors and even grab food out of the refrigerator.

Bolton said the dogs are trained to help veterans in their daily lives.

"If they've come back and have lost an arm or leg they may need a dog to pick up things. Some may have lost their motor skills in both hands and need a dog to open up doors and drawers," she said.

Bolton started training dogs for veterans in July. She said none of the dogs is fully trained yet, since it takes about two years.

So far, all the dogs have been donated by local breeders. Bolton said that is a huge help, since it is so costly to train the dogs.

Bolton said medical expenses alone add up to about $2,500 a dog.

The volunteer dog trainers allow the program to operate for free. "We don't get a dime for raising these dogs, training them and putting them out," she said.

Bolton said getting paid doesn't matter to her, though.

"It is rewarding. I don't know what my life would be like if I didn't do this," she said.

My Sheltie Raleigh and I were doing our regular Tuesday morning hospital visit at Phoenix Children's Hospital when we came across a group of nurses and aids in the hall. They were working with a teenage patient with a neurological impairment. The girl was sitting on the floor and would not get up to get into her wheel chair to return to her room for a procedure. We were asked to bring Raleigh over to her and she immediately calmed as she petted him. We told the girl she could hold Raleigh if she got back in the wheelchair. She then cooperated and we were able to get her back to her room and on to her bed. After she petted Raleigh for a bit, we were able to leave and the nurses could continue with their procedure. More and more of the hospital staff are seeing for themselves the value of the animal-assisted activities/therapy program.

Annie Rose (AR) and I became a Delta Society Pet Partners team in 2003. She was 25 pounds of smart and sassy and bossy - a sable Pembroke Welsh Corgi diva who demanded attention and adoration.

Early on we visited many nursing homes and assisted living facilities. I remember the lady who spoke no English; she would murmur sweet Russian nothings into Annie Rose's ear, and AR would make appropriate canine responses.

Or the retired veterinarian who brightened when we entered her room. Living deep in the chasm of dementia, she would say, "I don't understand why they call me 'Doctor.' The doctor is the one who comes here to take care of me." She so loved the animals but had no memory that they had been her life's work. For a few brief moments during our visits, they once more became her passion.

LONDON — A perky British Labrador whose bomb-sniffing exploits helped save lives in Afghanistan was decorated for canine courage in a ceremony at London's Imperial War Museum on Wednesday.

Eight-year-old Treo joins a menagerie of heroic animals honored over the years with a special award known as the Dickin medal, including 32 pigeons, three horses and a cat.

Sgt. Dave Heyhoe, the black Lab's handler, said he was "very proud indeed," adding the award was not just for him and his dog but "for every dog and handler that's working out in Afghanistan or Iraq."

Treo merely flicked out his rosy tongue as he and Heyhoe posed for photographs with the silvery medal. He squirmed as the medal was fitted around his neck.

The military nominated Treo for the prize in recognition of his help uncovering a series of Taliban bombs during his time serving in Helmand Province, an insurgency hot spot, in 2008. The Labrador is the medal's 63rd recipient since its inception in 1943, according to the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, the charity that awards the prize.

"I screamed very loud," said Christensen. "My husband heard me scream."

Ronnie, her nine-year-old, 30-pound Wire Fox Terrier, was in the backyard when the 45-pound coyote moved closer. Christensen at the time was holding her smaller Silky Terrier. Another dog was safe inside the house.

"Ronnie turned around and tried to stop the coyote from coming toward me," said Christensen.

Christensen says a fight broke out between Ronnie and the coyote.

"The coyote bit him. I saw him bite him, then Ronnie turned around and bit him back," said Christensen. "Coyote got spooked and Ronnie started chasing him."

Ronnie chased the coyote off the property. The dog suffered three puncture wounds, but they're already almost healed and he's going to be okay.

"It's really shocking to us, because he's timid when he's off our property," said Christensen. "To see him be that way and go after the coyote was surprising."

Authorities did investigate the Saturday night attack. The coyote was nowhere to be seen.

"Smaller animals, unfortunately, do get attacked from time to time by coyotes," said Ryan Drabek from Orange County Animal Care Services. "Which is why we recommend keep small pets under close observation when outdoors, or keep inside."

Ronnie is now getting lots of attention, and gifts from other dog owners in the neighborhood.

His owner says has lived up to his name.

"He's named after Ronald Reagan," said Christensen. "President Reagan was a hero of mine."

Pearl is now 3 years old. She was bought from a breeder when she was 9 wks old. At the time I took her home she was getting over a cold. I didn't know this was a bad sign. I already had my heart set on her after seeing her when she was 6 weeks. The cold turned into pneumonia when I brought her home. She required ongoing visits to the respiratory specialist at Animal medical Ctr. All the while I always thought there was something off about her... in fact I used to tell the vet I thought she was dumb. Then one day I came home from work and realized as she greeted me she wasn't looking at me. That's when I knew she he was blind. I took her back to AMC and the opthamology service there confirmed she was blind...but it was not her eyes, it was neurological. Otherwise known as cortical blindness. I don't know how this happened. maybe the infection? Maybe they say hydracephalus. Maybe it was one evening when my friend was holding her and she jumped from her arms and fell to the floor? Without an MRI I will never know, but an MRI is really expensive and it won't change anything. Her sight is never going to come back.

It turns out she is a darling dog. And smart. They say blind dogs are often not that nice. Pearl is so passive and so sweet. She can turn up the diva dial too when she wants something. I probably spoil her more than the average because of her condition. But when I asked the vet "so what's the good news?" and he said "Pearl is very happy"... I realized that it was then my role to keep her happy. And so I have. People are often very sympathetic about her blindness which is very nice, but I have to reassure them that she has a great life. They feel bad... some cannot tolerate even the thought of it and others simply don't understand why I would have kept her. Its unfortunate that not everyone "gets it" She gives alot of love and affection.

Its not always easy but I love her like crazy. .

Strider Watching Over Me: About six days after an incident in which I broke my foot, with Strider walking along beside me, I maneuvered a wheelchair down a rather uneven trail toward Hooker Falls. I was looking for a place where I could hold up near a stream and read while my two weekend guests explored hiking trails to Triple and High Falls in DuPont State Forest. (The next time I try this alone, the wheelchair needs to be outfitted with mountain bike wheels!) Some spots were rough going, and I momentarily got stuck on rocks in the uneven terrain. Eventually I wheel-chaired into a beautiful spot beside a stream, which was exactly what I had hoped to find.

What was most interesting was Strider's reaction. On his own, Strider took a position between me-in-the-wheelchair and a path several yards from us on which people hiked the remaining half mile to Hooker Falls. It is perhaps not every day that a wheel chaired-grey-haired senior and her therapy dog are found ensconced beside a mountain stream, so people stopped, took pictures, and wanted to pet Strider. This wonderful Delta Society registered therapy dog---who during his hospital visits lets children brush his teeth, put his booties on him, dress him with scarves, brush his coat, and cuddle him; who gets invited as the main event to a five year old’s birthday party; and who is hugged on, fed, pampered, and played with by all ages---would not initially let anyone near me! In fact, he guarded me by emitting a very low-sort-of-warning sound. I was a well-protected sheep. Of course, intelligent as he is, when it became clear that there was no actual threat, he allowed himself to be approached.

I enjoyed several hours of glorious reading with my senses filled by a bubbling mountain stream, bird songs, and my ever-faithful and vigilant herding dog protecting me from anything and anyone!!

It happened in Georgia not long ago, that a farmer and his wife decided to sleep late, like the rich folk do. It was a beautiful Sunday morning, the kind that brings all God's creatures out to play. But not these farm folk. No, they just slept and slept and slept.

The crows were gathered in a large oak tree, having a big morning meeting. They noticed that there was nobody stirring around the house, and that the corn was ripe in the field. So they adjourned their meeting mighty quick and flew over to the field to eat some corn.

"Caw-n, caw-n," they cackled excitedly.

The old rooster woke up to their activities and started to crow excitedly to the sleeping family. "Wake up, wake up, wake up!"

The farmer and his wife just kept sleeping, and the crows kept eating the corn.

"Caw-n, caw-n," they called.

"The crows are in the corn! The crows are in the corn!" The rooster cock-a-doodle-dooed with all his might.

The farmer kept snoring, and his wife just rolled over and pulled the pillow over her head.

The rooster was frantic. He tried once more: "The crows are in the corn. They're pulling up the corn!"

The farmer and his wife kept right on sleeping. And the crow's kept right on eating.

The rooster quit crowing in disgust. Nothing would wake the farmer and his wife.

The old turkey came strolling into the yard and watched the proceedings. Finally he said to the rooster: "The corns all et up, all et up, all et up."

When the farmer and his wife finally rolled out of bed, they found that the corn was all gone. That is why in Georgia we say "the crows are in the corn" when it is time to get up.

There once was a woman traveling home from England who lost her pooch somewhere between Salem and Springfield. He was just about the shaggiest dog in the entire world; so shaggy you couldn't tell which end was which until his tail started wagging. The woman was completely distraught. She loved the dog like it was her own son, so she advertised in all the local newspapers, hoping to find him. The advertisement read: "Missing, extremely shaggy dog. Reward. Will pay all travel expenses of finder." Then it listed her home address.

It didn't take long for people to start climbing her front steps with a shaggy dog in tow. The woman would answer the door eagerly and step out onto the porch to survey the dog. Each and every time she would shake her head sadly and say: "Not shaggy enough. He's just not shaggy enough." Folks came from the East, but their dogs weren't shaggy enough. They came from the West, but their dogs weren't shaggy enough. The ones from the South weren't shaggy enough either, and neither were the ones from the North.

The woman was about to give up in despair when she received a letter from a chap in England. Claimed to have found a shaggy dog stowed away on his ship when he was traveling from Salem, Massachusetts to Liverpool, England. The woman was so excited. Could it be her shaggy dog at last? He'd gone missing just after she left Salem! After writing back and forth with the English chap a few times, she paid the ship fare to America for both the man and his shaggy dog.

Well, the woman waited and waited and waited! Oh how she longed for the big day to arrive. Finally, (finally!), she heard a crisp voice outside the house and the sound of footsteps coming up the front walkway. She sprang to the door, opened it, and burst out onto the porch. Then she staggered backward and clapped a hand to her heart, staring at the huge hairy ball on the leash beside the Englishman. In despair, she cried out: "Oh no! Not THAT shaggy!"

This story is for people who believe that dreams can manifest in reality.

At the end of a long day, I slipped into bed and drifted off to sleep. I hardly ever remember my dreams, but this one I remember vividly. I was on vacation with my family and for some reason I had a black Labrador that I loved very much. The main focus of the dream was tossing the frisbee. A recurring theme was that he would steal frisbees that were lying around a parking lot near other people's cars (no idea why).

Every time he would bring the frisbee back to me, I would have to take it back to the owner and apologize for my dog. The ritual was that we would go from the parking lot to the park for more wide open and peaceful environment. I would hop in my car and start driving and the dog would run and grab the frisbee and jump into the passenger seat while the car was moving; it was kind of cool.

Well it came time for whatever reason for me and the dog to part. I stood sobbing on my doorstep; I seemed to be conversing with the animal and knew it had to be this way.

I told the dog "see ya" and woke up.

A few days later as I was walking to the park to sit quietly and read, was distracted by a man and a dog playing catch with a frisbee. To my shock and amazement the dog was exactly as I had pictured it in my dreams; black Labrador. Astonished, I walked up to the pair and the dog didn't bark at all, it simply ran up to me and began wagging its tail.

I asked the man about his dog and could not believe what I'd heard. Apparently he had found the Labrador in the parking lot to his apartment complex with a frisbee in its mouth. He had put up posters advertising a lost dog and nobody had claimed him, so he simply kept the dog, which he named Cerberus after the three headed dog who guards the gates of Hades in Greek mythology.

KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan — The U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan has led to a dog surge -- and unexpected problems in procuring high-quality dog food with enough protein and nutrients for hundreds of canines used to find explosives and perform other energy-intensive missions.

Along with about 37,000 U.S. and NATO troops, the number of military working dogs being brought into the country to search for mines, explosives and to accompany soldiers on patrol is increasing substantially, according to Nick Guidas, the American K-9 project manager for Afghanistan.

Guidas, a civilian contractor who primarily oversees dog operations in southern Afghanistan, said he has 50 dogs on operational teams and about 20 more awaiting missions. He expects that number to go up to 219 by July.

"It may go as high as 315 dogs in Afghanistan," he said Saturday at a crowded kennel full of highly trained German and Dutch shepherds, Belgian Malinois and Labradors on this air base, the hub of U.S. and international security forces' operations in the volatile Kandahar area.

A young Marton man owes his life to his plucky, switched-on dog Pongo.

Todd Spring, 22, is a diabetic but mostly the dark side of illness doesn't bother him because he knows how to keep it under control with his medication.

But in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Pongo, who usually sleeps outside, was asleep inside on the floor of the living room when something disturbed him.

Pongo knew something wasn't right with his master.

The golden staffy/bull mastiff cross whined and growled outside Todd's bedroom door until someone woke up.

"He woke mum up ,and she thought he wanted to go outside, but then she saw him growling and crying outside my door and decided she'd better have a look."

Todd had had a diabetic seizure. He was unconscious and seriously ill.

"Mum couldn't believe it and was stunned that Pongo had raised the alarm. Pongo saved me. I would have died because I was unconscious and didn't know what was going on."

SAN FRANCISCO — A Navy seal -- actually a sea lion -- took less than a minute to find a fake mine under a pier near AT&T Park.

A dolphin quickly located a terrorist lurking in the black water before another sea lion, using a device carried in its mouth, cuffed the pretend saboteur's ankle so authorities could reel him in.

The specially trained Navy Marine Mammals, based in San Diego, stole the show in a day of anti-terrorism training exercises held at ports throughout California.

More than 3,000 local, state and federal responders are participating in the scenarios that began Tuesday as part of California's annual two-day homeland security and disaster preparedness exercises started by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004.

The drills include a fake attack on a container ship at the Port of Oakland, a fake bomb explosion at the Port of Redwood City, and fake terrorist attacks in waters off Los Angeles, Long Beach, Sacramento and San Diego.

Do you suffer from depression? Or are physical ailments getting you down? My advice for you: get a pet.Animals are succeeding where psychiatrists are not. What is their secret? It’s certainly not drugs, or long couches. It is, rather, their nature, their warm, open, selfless nature. Now pets are showing up as key players in nursing homes and institutions for homeless or retarded children.Doctors are realising why animals are accomplishing so much. The problem with people in similar institutions is that they are in isolation. Many have lost their sense of responsibility. So having a pet to care and nurture is ideal for these people. For instance, dogs give unconditional love. They ask for attention, and when they have got that, they shower you with love and affection. This can make a lonely person feel loved and wanted.

TUPPER LAKE — Walking through the brush, Wicket, a jet-black dog, had its nose to the ground and its tail wagging when suddenly the animal stopped and sat.

The game was over. Wicket had just found moose scat.

Now the dog wanted its reward, a red ball, which its handler, Aimee Hurt, gladly placed in its mouth.

Wicket is part of a pilot program in the Adirondacks that scientists hope will give them a better understanding of the growing moose population here.

Wicket has been trained by Working Dogs for Conservation, a Montana-based organization that has trained dogs to find the scat of grizzly bears, mountain lions and desert turtles as well as invasive and rare plants.

“Their ability to discriminate (between smells) is mind boggling,” handler Alice Whitelaw said to a crowd of scientists and journalists in a field outside Tupper Lake Thursday.

This past winter, the dogs were trained in Montana on moose scat gathered in the Adirondack Park by scientists and volunteers. They are part of a project called AROMA, or Adirondack Return of Moose Assessment, sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Society and Natural Museum of the Adirondacks.

Now the dogs will spend the next two weeks roaming areas of the Park where moose populations are believed to be high. Much of the field work is being done here in the north-central Adirondacks.

Doctors are realising why animals are accomplishing so much.

Still, many psychiatrists are skeptical about this new form of treatment. Many feel that all animals can do is help a person to open up and communicate. But they do not cure patients. So in a lot of cases seeking professional help is still recommended. Some psychiatrists use cats and dogs as co-therapists and this seems to be bringing in good results.

In America there is a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane which uses small animals in a pet-therapy program. Birds, fish, gerbils and guinea pigs are the most common animals used. Here are some examples:

A patient did not talk for around four months. The staff decided to give him a pet cockatiel. At night, the bird slept in a cage by his bed. During the day it would sit perched on his shoulder. He started to talk to the bird, and two months after receiving his pet, he started talking with people.

Something similar happened to a suicidal patient serving time for armed robbery. He too was given a bird to care for. His uncooperative, antisocial behaviour changed. He said his problem was that he had never felt compassion. His pet bird help him gain this quality. He is now a student of ornithology & when he was released he encouraged other institutions to use animal therapy programs.

Boys from the age of 7 to 18 years were sent to a certain boys home by court order. Some had never had a real home, some were abused by parents, some were mentally retarded, and others were sent by state reformatories. This home had one other special member- a cat named Tiger. This cat helped transform once very wild & uncontrollable youths into calm & trusting boys.

Children who have been hardened by a cruel outside world, know that a dog or a cat that approaches them for affection doesn’t have some sinister ulterior motive. Thus, in a children’s psychiatric hospital in Maryland a dog named Skeezer can be seen wandering freely between the wards offering affection to the children. The kids know that they won’t be rejected – they can, therefore, feel safe to show their emotions to the animal. This is a crucial step on the road to recovery.

Studies have also shown that having a pet leads to some very real physical benefits. For instance people who have pets generally have a lower blood pressure level. It has even been stated by medical experts that a heart patient’s chances of survival increases by three times if he has a pet. When a person calms a pet, the heart rate of both of them falls. A study conducted by the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore in 1993 showed that heart patients with pets had a much better chance of survival after they left the hospital than those patients who did not have pets. Of 92 patients, one year after release 11 of the 39 without pets had died, whereas just 3 of the 59 with pets had died.

A pet can also fill a lonely void for older persons. As their own children get older, such persons can feel more and more that they are a burden and, worse, that they have been abandoned by their loved ones. The sad result is often depression. A pet can, though, help to fill the gap left in the live’s of the elderly.

Pets, then, can be wonderful aids in helping people through difficult times. They should never, though, replace professional assistance. Use the two together for best results.
